A new favourite among grassroots tuners is quietly making waves and it’s not what you’d expect. The early year Toyota Echo has emerged as an unlikely hero, winning over enthusiasts with its lightweight chassis, nimble steering, and surprising potential when given the right upgrades.

Let’s be honest from the factory, the Echo wasn’t built to set lap records or dominate drag strips. But weighing in at under a tonne and featuring a simple, responsive front-wheel-drive setup, it delivers something many modern cars have lost which is that pure, unfiltered driving feel. The steering is light but direct, the chassis is playful, and its compact footprint makes it perfect for tight backroads. For tuners, it’s the perfect blank canvas.

Under the hood sits the humble 1NZ-FE engine, which is bullet proof, but not particularly quick. That’s where the aftermarket tuner steps in and that name is aftermarket part supplier Zage based in Taiwan.

It’s designed to integrate cleanly with the factory setup, making installation straightforward for experienced DIYers or workshops. But make no mistake this isn’t a ‘plug and play’ power jump. To unlock the full potential (and not to detonate the engine), a proper ECU remap is required. Ideally, tuners will opt for a standalone or aftermarket ECU to gain full control over fueling, ignition timing, and boost levels.

Once dialled in, the transformation is dramatic. The lightweight Echo, already agile and responsive, suddenly gains the power it always lacked.
