Honda F20C Tuner Guide – STAGE 1 up to 130KW (174hp) at the wheels

A clean, low-mileage Honda S2000 that has been properly serviced and maintained will typically produce around 120 kW (160hp) at the wheels. While the F20C engines are already highly engineered from the factory, it is still possible to gain approximately 10 kW (approx. 13hp) at the wheels without opening the engine.

One of the challenges when modifying an S2000 is that Honda designed these engines with performance as a priority. As a result, finding bolt-on parts that deliver genuine power gains can be difficult. It is important to focus on modifications that have been proven to improve performance rather than relying on marketing claims.

Exhaust System Upgrade

The first and easiest bolt-on modification is an aftermarket exhaust system. Many manufacturers advertise gains of up to 7 kW from an exhaust upgrade alone; however, these figures are often achieved on modified engines rather than otherwise standard vehicles.

For a lightly modified street-driven S2000, a realistic expectation is a gain of around 3–4 kW (4–5 hp) at the wheels.

A proven option is the HKS Hi-Power Spec-L II exhaust system designed for Honda S2000. Constructed from stainless steel, this system weighs approximately 60% less than the factory exhaust while maintaining excellent durability.

The HKS system delivers modest power improvements while retaining excellent street manners. Noise levels peak at approximately 94 dB, providing a sporty exhaust note without excessive cabin drone. HKS achieves this through its signature chamber design, which reduces low-frequency resonance while maintaining an engaging exhaust sound. This system can be purchased here

Intake Modifications

The next area to consider is the intake system. Interestingly, the factory Honda airbox is widely regarded as one of the best intake setups available for the S2000.

For owners seeking a simple and cost-effective upgrade, installing a K&N panel filter (Part Number: E-2435) within the factory airbox can provide a gain of approximately 3–4 kW (4–5 hp) while maintaining factory fitment and reliability.

For those with a larger budget, Mugen offers a complete intake system specifically designed for the S2000. However, these systems can cost in excess of $2,000 and generally provide only marginal improvements over the factory airbox. From a value-for-money perspective, the gains rarely justify the expense.

ECU Tuning

ECU tuning is often a popular modification on performance vehicles, but the S2000’s factory calibration is already of a very high standard. Honda’s engineers developed excellent air-fuel ratios and ignition timing maps, leaving limited room for improvement on an otherwise standard engine.

While aftermarket tuning can be beneficial when combined with extensive modifications, owners should not expect significant gains from ECU remapping. So it is best to avoid tampering with it unless it is necessary.

Maintenance before Performance Modifications

Before investing in aftermarket parts, ensure the vehicle is operating exactly as Honda intended. A comprehensive service can often restore lost power and improve overall engine performance.

Recommended maintenance items include:

  • Fresh engine oil
  • New oil filter
  • Replacement spark plugs
  • Inspection and replacement of worn service items
  • General engine health check

These basic maintenance procedures help ensure the engine is delivering its full factory performance and provide a solid foundation for future modifications.

Expected Results

When combined, a quality exhaust system, intake upgrade and thorough maintenance can realistically deliver around 10 kW of additional power at the wheels without the need for internal engine modifications.

The Honda S2000 remains one of the most highly developed naturally aspirated sports cars ever produced. For this reason, the best modifications focus on improving airflow and maintaining engine health rather than chasing unrealistic power gains from bolt-on parts alone.
